About My Work
My PhD project looks at the Italian literary representation of the metropole-periphery relationship between Italy and the Eastern Adriatic. Within the research I found myself investigating issues related to the representation of cities and urban realities as carriers of significance capable of justifying imperial invasions. For instance, Italian authors used to justify the Italian dominion in Dalmatia by underpinning the fact that the Italians were an urban community, meanwhile the Croats or Serbs were not. Furthermore, Fascism emphasized its capability to develop urban communities in allegedly backward contexts, like the Albanian one. Consequently, my research looks also at the diverse uses of the concept of city made by a colonial power.
