GUHP in Yokohama

Our heartfelt thanks once again to Professor Naoto Nakajima and the tireless organizing team from the International Planning History Society for inviting GUHP to organize a dozen extremely interesting panels at their biannual conference this past July in Yokohama, Japan. The conference theme “Looking at the World History of Planning” is near and dear to GUHP’s heart, and many panels at the conference addressed themes in global urban history.

Pictured above are many of the GUHP-sponsored panelists, including by our first junior-scholar Travel Awardees. They presented nearly fifty papers on such important subjects as planning without planners, the global petroleumscape, socialist planning, the impact of mega-events, the history of treaty ports, financial centers, urban renewal, and global cities. Titles of all the panels and papers can be found here.

Congratulations to Carola Hein for the Special Prize she received from the IPHS Board for her work in editing the Routledge Handbook of Planning History.

Effusive thanks to Kristin Stapleton, Carola Hein, Nancy Kwak, Toby Lincoln, Hou Li, and Weiliang Zhang for all their work organizing panels and raising awareness of the Global Urban History Project at the conference.

Travel Awardees tweeted about the conference and produced a few short videos of participants talking about their work and their presentations. Some of these are posted on GUHP Videos, and we will post more as we receive permission to do so. Thanks especially to Rezvan Sarkhosh for her tireless work in corraling participants and getting them to speak into her iPhone! Meanwhile look out for blog entries and conference reports to get more of a flavor of this exciting event.

GUHP Goes to Rome

Speaking of exciting events, next Thursday, August 30 from 1:30 to 5:00 pm, GUHP will make the final stop on its "Roundtables-Around-the-World" series with a two-part discussion of “Explorations in Intersections of Global History and Urban History” (session RT01) at the Biannual Conference of the European Association of Urban Historians (EAUH) in Rome, Italy. Joseph Ben Prestel and Carl Nightingale will chair this conceptually-oriented event which features presentations by Bronwen Everell, Ayala Levin, Anindita Ghosh, Cyrus Schayegh, and Rosemary Wakeman. The EAUH organizers have provided us with lots of time for discussion. If you are in Rome for EAUH, please join us! The Roundtable runs from 13:30-17:00 with a short break, Thursday afternoon Aug. 30 in Room 03.

Note that other GUHP members will be very active at the conference, which includes several other panels with GUH-related themes. These include, but are not limited to:

Dries Lyna and Maarten van Dijck, “Challenges or Opportunities? The Social Fabric of Colonial Port Cities, 1500-1850' Panel M17, Wednesday September 29, 9-10:20, 12-1:30 Room 08

Emma Hart and Deborah Simonton, “Belonging and Exclusion, Insiders and Outsiders: people and the Resilient City from 1450” Session M09 Friday 31 August, from 9-3:30, Room 1

Laura Kolbe and Rosemary Wakeman, “East Meets West: Urban History and the Cold War,” Session M31, Friday 31st August, 9-3:30, Room 21

The website for WHA/GUHP San Juan proposals is up

Please consider organizing and proposing panels for San Juan in June 2019!

The World History Association has announced the opening of the website for proposals for the conference in San Juan Puerto Rico June 27-19, 2019, an event co-organized by GUHP. If you have ideas for papers or panels that fit the conference theme “Cities in Global Contexts” please contact Carl Nightingale at cn6@buffalo.edu. We will use the GUHP site and other media to advertise openings for presenters in these GUHP panels over the course of the fall in anticipation of the November 30 deadline.

Reminder about GUHP/CUH Leicester

Also remember that GUHP is co-organizing two conferences next summer: the second being a joint conference at the Centre for Urban History at the University of Leicester (July 11-12, 2019). Information on submitting papers or panels to the Leicester 2019 conference have been up for some time at the link above. Feel free to choose either one of these events, or come to both!

Look out for more breaking news from GUHP and about the state of the field of global urban history in the upcoming months!
