About My Work
I am a political historian of modern Europe. My work explores state-building and empire, as well as larger questions of sovereignty across different periods of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

My early work explored the aftermath of the 1848 revolutions in the German states. I am currently working on two projects, one quite different to this early work and one which extends it. My first project (funded by the British Academy; Oxford University Press; and the Humanities Research Fund, University of Warwick) takes me into Spain's swanson of colonial engagement in North Africa, specifically in Morocco. Here I look at the building of the city of Tetouan from 1912 to 1956, and the impact it had on Spanish attitudes towards the state, empire, and world order. Articles related to this project weave together my Spanish and German fields of expertise, especially as the German presence in North Africa increased during WWII. The second project I am developing grows out of my earlier work on state-building but carries it forward in time to the collapse of the German Empire.
