About My Work
I work on the history of urbanization in southwestern China. My book manuscript, "The Life and Death of the Socialist Factory: Urbanization and Industrialization, 1958 to today," examines how industrialization expanded urban spaces under socialism and how such development became an integral part of capitalist urban planning and real estate investments from the 1980s to today. My work pays attention to labor, the urban-rural divide, and gender, arguing that the segregation between the city and the countryside was key to socialist accumulation. It also examines how the uncompensated domestic labor of rural and urban women contributed to industrial and urban development in an indispensable way.
