About My Work
My recent work is on -
Indore was the capital of the Holkar dynasty, and the city’s historical narrative is deeply intertwined with the Holkars’ efforts to develop it into a significant cultural and commercial hub. The legacy of figures like Ahilyabai Holkar, who is celebrated for her contributions to urban development and cultural patronage, is particularly important in understanding how place names reflect the socio-political climate of the time. The project proposes to establish a comprehensive digital archive that chronicles the historical evolution of Indore, with a particular emphasis on the changing names of locations within the city. Creating a digital archive will create a public commons to access and understand the story of the city. By preserving and presenting Indore's cultural heritage, the project provides a nuanced understanding of how and why place names change in response to evolving urban landscapes. By analysing maps, official records, lithographs, gazettes, and other relevant materials, the project documents the transformation of place names in relation to Indore's urban development. Through interdisciplinary approaches, this project intends to bridge the past and present of Indore, shedding light on its evolution and preserving its heritage for future generations.
