THE ACTIVITIES OF SETTLEMENT AND RECONSTRACTION
DURING THE EARLY OTTOMAN IN BOSNIA

The Balkan region is of particular importance for Ottoman Empire. During the Interregnum, while the principalities in Anatolia were declaring their independence, most of the places conquered in the Balkans stayed in Ottomans. This dependence is the result of the leniency, settlement and reconstruction policy of the empire in the Balkans. The depression undergone both in the center of the empire and in the Balkans after the detachment of Bosnia from Ottoman Empire in 1878 shows the value of those places for the empire. This value was reflected on the 20th century that the ones who could not accept the Ottoman identity and Islam civilization carried out massacre to Bosnia who declared its independence, and wanted to clear that identity by destroying the historical artifacts. This identity formation in Bosnia dates back to 15th century. Dervishes and alperenler made efforts to win the hearts of people in the Bosnian area before the conquest.
In the wake of the conquest of Bosnia in Mehmet the conqueror period, this region islamized through settlement and reconstruction and remained under the domination of Ottoman Empire for 400 years. We can come across samples of the most beautiful cities and the most preeminent architectural works belonging to Ottoman Empire in Bosnia. Bosnia is also an exceptional area where all cultures and religions have lived together for centuries. How Bosnia transformed under the domination of Ottoman Empire is among the most overemphasized issues of the last century. Bosnian historians and many European historians have estimated and carried out evaluation on this issue; and revealed consequences through many historical documents. In this study, in company with archive works and modern research, early Ottoman activities in Bosnia will be examined within the frame of settlement and reconstruction; and Bosnia’s importance to Ottoman Empire will be dealt along with transformation process to province.
